The Elopement Honeymoon: Why You Should Stay a Little Longer on Ærø

When couples write to us about eloping in Denmark, they are often focused on the day itself. They think about the paperwork, the flowers, and the moment they say yes.
But over the years, we have learned that the magic of an elopement does not end when the ceremony does. It is only the beginning.
An elopement gives you something a traditional wedding rarely can: time. Without a tight schedule or a ballroom full of guests to entertain, your wedding day transitions seamlessly into your honeymoon.
Why One Day on Ærø Is Never Enough
There is an incredible abundance of things to experience on our island, far too much for a single afternoon. If you are planning to marry here with us at Danish Island Weddings, we always encourage you to unpack your bags.
Staying for several days allows you to explore at your own pace. What follows is a small selection of our personal favorite places and experiences to inspire your stay.
Slow Wanderings in Ærøskøbing
The rush of modern life ends the moment you roll off the ferry. Our home town of Ærøskøbing is built for quiet, unhurried exploration.
There is an intentional absence of rushing here. As you walk through the cobbled streets, you will notice the colourful, historic doors and the roses climbing up half-timbered houses.
The Charm of Roadside Trust Stalls
As you explore the quiet town, look out for the small roadside stalls. These tiny setups sell everything from homemade jams to fresh fruit and crafts.
Operating entirely on a trust system, they reflect the island's unique and welcoming soul. They are a gentle reminder of the slower rhythm of life you are about to step into.
Courtyard Comfort at Den Gamle Købmandsgaard
Located right on the town square, Den Gamle Købmandsgaard is the beating heart of the town’s local food and craft scene. It is a wonderful historic merchant’s court filled with island-made spirits, honey, and wool.
It is the perfect place to grab a freshly brewed coffee and find a seat in their incredibly cozy courtyard garden. Sitting together under the shade of the large walnut tree, you can listen to the quiet morning hum.
Stepping Back in Time at Hammerichs Hus
Just a short stroll from the square, you can step into a literal time capsule of island romance. Hammerichs Hus is a low-ceilinged, 18th-century home filled with historical nooks and crannies.
Once the summer refuge of sculptor Gunnar Hammerich, it was a space dedicated to hosting friends and celebrating life. Walking through its small rooms and looking at the antique collections offers a beautiful, peaceful space for reflection.
Two Wheels and the Open Road
You do not need a complex itinerary to enjoy the island. One of the best things to do is simply rent a pair of bicycles.
Embrace the philosophy of the American travel guide Rick Steves. He famously highlighted Ærø as a wonderful "time-passed world" where the only way to truly unlock the island’s essence is by stepping off the clock and pedaling through the countryside.
Gathering Sourdough at Franz Brød
For a classic island picnic, make a stop in Vestergade at Franz Brød, a wonderful local micro-bakery.
Pick up one of their signature crusty sourdough loaves and a couple of their warm, perfectly spiced cardamom rolls. The aroma alone makes this a mandatory stop on your bicycle tour.
Completing the Perfect Picnic Basket
Next, head back over to Den Gamle Købmandsgaard to complete your basket. Here you can handpick an array of artisan cheeses from Fyn, cured sausages, olives, and specialty delicacies.
Pair these treats with a good bottle of wine from their shelves. Now your basket is heavy with local flavors, and you are ready to hit the coast.
Calm Waters at Vesterstrand
Ride towards Vesterstrand, where the iconic, tiny wooden beach huts sit right at the water's edge.
Sit on the sand, break the freshly baked bread together, and share the local flavours. Pour a glass of wine and listen to the calm waters of the South Fyn Archipelago. Without modern distractions, it is a quiet reminder of what matters.
Dramatic Views from Voderup Klint
For a completely different landscape, venture inland towards Voderup Klint. These unique, stepped cliffs look straight out across the open Baltic Sea.
Walking along the grass allows you to look down over the massive terraces shaped by the ice age. It offers a vast, peaceful view that makes you feel connected to the wilder side of the island.
The Living History of Søbygaard
On the northern part of the island, you will discover Søbygaard. This historical gem, which also serves as a Geopark visitor center, is a vibrant cultural hub where history genuinely comes alive.
You can feel the deep roots of the island's past walking across the stone bridge over the quiet moat. It provides a beautiful, reflective contrast to the wild coastline.
Summer Music in the Concert Room
If you visit during the summer months, you can experience the famous Søbygaardkoncerterne. This incredible concert series draws renowned international classical musicians and ensembles to perform on the estate.
The performances take place entirely indoors, held within an intimate, high-ceilinged, and wood-paneled concert room that seats a maximum of 100 people. The space creates an incredibly close connection between the performers and the audience.
Masterpieces by Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen
The concert room itself is a work of art. The space is beautifully decorated with twenty-seven vibrant, original glass mosaic sketches by the renowned artist Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen, who lived and worked on the island.
The room also houses a legendary, custom-imported Fazioli grand piano. Hand-selected to match the unique acoustics of the room, it creates an incredibly rich, unforgettable sound.
Pre-Concert Tapas on the Castle Grounds
To make a summer concert evening here truly unforgettable, you can pre-order a delicious tapas picnic platter online beforehand through their site.
Arrive early to spread a blanket on the green grass of the old castle grounds. Share a glass of wine and fresh local delicacies before stepping inside to let the classical masterworks wrap around you.
Sunsets and Horizons at Skjoldnæs Fyr
Standing tall on the absolute northern tip of the island, Skjoldnæs Fyr is one of our absolute favorite places on Ærø. This magnificent granite lighthouse stands tall against the elements, surrounded by the great Baltic Sea on three sides.
It is a stunning, wild place and one of our favorite locations to host outdoor wedding ceremonies. Climbing the steps to the top gallery together as newlyweds offers a breathtaking view where the open sea meets the sky. It is the perfect place to watch the sun go down.
Local Crafts at the Ærø Soap Company
Tucked into the countryside on your way across the island, you will find a wealth of local artisans. One of our favorite stops is the Ærø Soap Company.
Stepping inside their charming farm shop is a true sensory experience. Everything is handmade on-site using natural ingredients, often infused with botanicals grown right here on the island.
Vineyards in a Cool Climate
It surprises many of our couples to learn that we have our own vineyard here. A visit to Ærø Vin gives you a glimpse into small-scale, passionate cool-climate winemaking.
Walking through the vines with the sea breeze in the air is a beautiful way to spend a quiet afternoon together. You might even want to take a bottle home as a souvenir.
Local Brews at Ærø Bryggeri
Further down into the center of the island, make a stop at Ærø Bryggeri. Located in a beautifully restored building, you can sample their traditional, locally brewed beers.
Sitting in the sunny courtyard or inside the rustic taproom is an authentic, unpretentious spot to toast to your new life together. It is an ideal resting spot during a long day of cycling.
Autumn & Winter "Hygge"
While the summer brings long, sun-drenched days, there is a distinct, unmatched magic to an off-season elopement honeymoon on Ærø. When the autumn leaves fall and the wind picks up, the island transforms into the ultimate sanctuary for hygge.
The crisp autumn air makes the coastal walks even more invigorating. Afterward, you can retreat indoors to the warmth of open fireplaces and candlelight.
Off-Season Island Rhythms
The changing season also brings its own rhythm. You can experience the traditional harvest market (Høstmarked) at Søbygaard, filled with local crafts and autumn workshops.
Afterward, you can spend a rainy afternoon inside the cozy taproom at Ærø Bryggeri, warming up with a rich, dark ale, or sip hot apple cider at Den Gamle Købmandsgaard while watching the rain against the old glass windows.
Bringing a locally crafted candle from the Ærø Soap Company back to your guesthouse room adds a beautiful sensory warmth after a long walk along a deserted Vesterstrand.
Embracing the Autumn Storms
Autumn also makes the wild landscapes even more dramatic. Watching the seasonal storms from the top of Skjoldnæs Fyr before heading back for an intimate, candlelit dinner at a local restaurant is an unforgettable experience.
An autumn or winter honeymoon here means having the cobblestone streets and wild cliffs entirely to yourselves. It is intimate, quiet, and deeply romantic.
